Om museet

The tram station of Schipluiden was put into service in 1912 for the Westlandsche Stoomtramweg Maatschappij (WSM), which from 1881 built up a steam tram network between The Hague, Hoek van Holland, Maassluis and Delft. The station in Schipluiden and its mirror-image twin in Maasland were built to plans by WSM director Ameijden van Duijm in an eclectic style combining chalet and Art Nouveau elements; the waiting room has wood panelling with rich Art Nouveau motifs, and the kitchen is still in its original condition. The stationmaster lived in the building with his family.

Passenger service on the steam tram ended in 1925, after which it mainly carried horticultural freight; the line saw its last run in 1967 and was later largely turned into a cycle path. From 1963 to 1987 a haulage company and a workshop used the building. In spring 1987 the municipality assigned the house to the Historische Vereniging Oud-Schipluiden; after extensive restoration it opened as Museum Het Tramstation on 28 April 1989.

Two permanent exhibitions show the history of the village: the transport exhibition is devoted to the Delflandse Trekvaarten and the WSM, and in the waiting room stands an H0-scale model of the station grounds with the tram bridge. The Keenenburgkamer is about Keenenburg Castle, which was built shortly after 1400, destroyed in the Eighty Years' War, rebuilt and demolished around 1798. Finds from excavations between 1976 and 1989 are on display; a tower and a section of wall were reconstructed on the old foundations in 1992. The society also shows changing exhibitions on local history.
