Om museet

In 1893 the collector Lambert van Meerten had a house built in Delft in the Neo-Renaissance style, which he called “Oud Holland”. It was designed together with his friends Adolf le Comte and Jan Schouten (Leonard Couvée also contributed to the design). His collections of architectural fragments, Delft ceramics and furniture were incorporated into the architecture and interior; from the start the house was also meant to be open to craftsmen, artists and students for inspiration. In 1902 Van Meerten went bankrupt, and large parts of the collection were auctioned.

Friends saved part of the house and collection. After the city of Delft took over the house in 1907, the Museum Lambert van Meerten opened on 16 October 1909, with Adolf le Comte as its first director. It showed Delft ceramics, Dutch tiles, Chinese porcelain and architectural fragments; later Jan Schouten’s large tile collection was added. In 2013 the museum was closed and the collection transferred to Museum Prinsenhof.

In 2016 the Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser acquired the house. Since July 2020 it has been open to the public again as a museum house, and at the end of 2020 individual furnishings returned to the house. The front part served Lambert for receiving guests, while at the back were the family rooms with the living room of his sister Dina.
