Om museet
Museum Hulst shows the history of the town of Hulst and the Hulst land in Eastern Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, from its beginnings to the present. It goes back to a local heritage society founded in 1927; in 1929 a first museum opened in an old classroom. Later it moved into the former refuge house of the Ten Duinen Abbey, and until 2018 it was called Streekmuseum De Vier Ambachten. After a major renovation, the museum moved into the ’s-Landshuis in 2022, where it reopened in June.
The ’s-Landshuis originally served as the administrative seat of the magistrates of the Hulsterambacht, who governed the land around the town. In its present form it dates from the mid-17th century; the neoclassical façade and the little roof turret were added between 1710 and 1720. After 1795 it was used by, among others, the justice of the peace, the cantonal court and the military police (marechaussee). In the annex there were horse stables and prison cells, one of which is now part of the tour.
The permanent exhibition leads through nine rooms, telling the story from the coastal landscape through settlement, the Middle Ages, war, the military frontier and emigration, to the modern border region. One room is devoted to the Reynaert epic, which earned Hulst the nickname "Reynaertstad". The museum also shows archaeological finds, regional costumes, guild history and fortifications. Since 2023 an exhibition of agricultural implements has been on display at the Natuurboerderij Ondersteboven in Ossenisse.
