For the 350th anniversary of Vermeer's death, René Jacobs and some 4,000 people from Delft created a version of the “View of Delft” from more than 110,000 miniature figures; also on show are a film about how it was made and other works by the artist.
Six stencil prints by Rob van Es that reduce Vermeer's paintings to color and composition, on the third floor.
Om museet
The Vermeer Centrum Delft opened in 2007 to give the Delft-born painter Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) a permanent home in his native city. The city owns no originals: after an auction in 1696, Vermeer's paintings were scattered around the world, and today the only ones in the Netherlands hang in the Mauritshuis and the Rijksmuseum. The center therefore explicitly sees itself not as an art museum but as an information center.
The building on the Voldersgracht stands on the site of the former guild hall of the Guild of St. Luke, the association of painters, glaziers, printers and potters to which Vermeer also belonged. In 1661 the guild had moved into the former chapel of the Oude Manhuys; after it was demolished in the 19th century, Pierre Cuypers had parts of its facade decoration built into the rear of the Rijksmuseum, and copies of them now adorn the facade in Delft.
On four floors, all of Vermeer's known paintings are on view as high-quality, life-size reproductions in the order in which they were created. Other areas explain his painting technique, pigments and the camera obscura, the hidden symbolism of his love scenes, and 17th-century Delft. The center is run by a nonprofit foundation without public subsidies and is financed by admission and shop sales; many of the staff are volunteers.
