Om museet
The museum goes back to a private collection of military uniforms that Jaap van der Burg began assembling around 1970. After he moved to Driebergen, the collection grew so large that the wish arose for a publicly accessible building. In 1988 the Stichting Museum Militaire Traditie acquired the building ’t Schilderhuis and set up the museum there; it was remodeled in 2006.
The house on Van Rijckevorselstraat had previously been a cinema and exhibition space and had housed small businesses since 1943. Today it shows the development of military clothing and equipment from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 to deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, including many original uniforms worn in the field and on parade. It describes itself as the only museum in the Netherlands that covers all branches of the armed forces since 1815.
The collection includes uniforms of the armed forces and the KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army), decorations, historical weapons, dioramas and miniatures, as well as a Waterloo model. Supplementary exhibitions cover conscription, the police actions in the Dutch East Indies and the New Guinea question. The museum also has a documentation center with a library and historical archive. It receives no subsidies and relies on donations, sponsors and volunteers.
