Om museet

Ink manufacturer Max von Gimborn, who built up a business in Zevenaar from 1904, had a site of around 47 hectares in Doorn on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug laid out from 1924 as a tree garden in the English landscape style; the design was drawn up by Gerard Bleeker. After the stock market crash of 1929, he had to sell large parts of the land again, and the planned country house was never built. The collection of rare woody plants, which he brought from Zevenaar and expanded by hundreds of plants every year, was already regarded as a dendrological attraction in the 1940s to 1960s, but remained closed to the public.

After Von Gimborn's death in 1964, Utrecht State University bought the arboretum from his widow at the end of 1965. It now served teaching and research, and the collection was systematically expanded, particularly with deciduous trees such as maple, ash and spindle; in 1981 it was opened to visitors on a limited basis for the first time. When the Dutch universities shed loss-making facilities around the turn of the millennium, the arboretum too was at risk. Since 2010 it has been in private hands and run by a foundation that places greater emphasis on the site's social role without compromising on the collection and its care.

Today the museum sees itself as the National Tree Museum. The living collection comprises more than 3,000 species and cultivars of trees and shrubs from regions such as the Alps, the Himalayas, Japan and Canada, including old stands of hemlock and a heather garden. A network of paths, a knowledge trail with six information boards and the GPS-assisted web app ArborTour lead to the highlights; a large treehouse and a nature playground attract families.
