More than 80 works on paper from the museum's own collection show how Rembrandt, Hercules Segers, Geertruydt Roghman and contemporary artists experimented with techniques and materials; with a drawing station for visitors.
Announced exhibition on Rembrandt's craftsmanship; the museum has not yet published further details.
Om museet
In 1639, at the height of his success, Rembrandt van Rijn bought the house built in 1606 on what was then Sint Anthonisbreestraat. For almost twenty years he lived and worked here, painting, etching, teaching students and amassing an extensive collection of art and curiosities. The heavy debts on the house contributed to his financial collapse; in 1656 his possessions were inventoried and auctioned, and around 1658 he had to move out.
In the early 20th century, the City of Amsterdam acquired the building, which had been heavily altered by then. After a restoration by architect K. P. C. de Bazel, it opened in 1911 as a museum, initially showing mainly Rembrandt's etchings.
In the late 1990s a modern extension was built next door for temporary exhibitions, the ticket desk and shop. At the same time, the historic rooms were furnished on the basis of the 1656 inventory and contemporary depictions to look as they might have in Rembrandt's time – with kitchen, living rooms, art cabinet, large studio and etching workshop.
The museum owns almost all of Rembrandt's etchings as well as works by his teachers, students and contemporaries. Every day, experts demonstrate how Rembrandt prepared his paints and printed etchings; exhibitions link his work with art by predecessors, successors and contemporary artists.
