Om museet

The Scouting Nederland Museum continues a tradition that began in The Hague in 1953. At the headquarters of the Vereniging van Nederlandse Padvinders, the Padvindersmuseum opened on March 21, 1953, probably one of the first museums of its kind in the world. The idea and the setup came from district commissioner Arnold Beekes. After the four associations merged into Scouting Nederland in 1973, the building had to be cleared, and the collection moved via Ommen and Soest.

In 1976 the national board decided to found a scouting museum with a historical archive; a working group was set up for this in 1979. The most suitable location turned out to be the coach house at Buitenzorg in Baarn, which was converted through the campaign "Jongeren bouwen voor jongeren" (Young People Build for Young People). The museum officially opened there on November 6, 1993.

At the new location the collection was expanded to include the history of the other three associations: the girl scouts of the Padvindsters Gilde, and the Catholic Verkenners and Gidsen. The tour follows the development of the movement from its beginnings, through its arrival in the Netherlands, to today's Scouting Nederland. It also looks at the worldwide movement, for example with badges from the World Jamborees.

The museum shows badges, uniforms, books, magazines, flags and banners, and a new temporary exhibition is added every year. It is run by volunteers, has ANBI status (Dutch charity status) and includes a documentation centre.
