Om museet
The oldest part of the museum, the Old Town Hall, dates back to around 1350. Kampen was then an important trading town in the Hanseatic network, which is why the building is in Lower Rhenish Gothic style, as can also be seen in German Hanseatic cities. After a fire in 1543 the town hall was restored; the Magistrates' Hall of 1545 dates from this period, where the city was governed for a long time and which is included in the “Canon of Dutch History”.
The present city museum opened in 2009 in the former town hall complex. Its collection comprises more than 8,300 objects – paintings, sculptures, silver, porcelain, everyday items and traditional costumes – that tell of the Hanseatic period, life on the IJssel, religion and the cigar industry. Highlights include winter scenes by Hendrick Avercamp, the oldest silver guild piece in the Netherlands and a drinking horn of 1369. As a former art academy town, Kampen has produced many artists, whose works the museum combines with historical pieces.
Since 2017 the Voormalige Synagoge (Former Synagogue) on the IJsselkade (built 1847) has also been part of the museum; it shows changing art exhibitions and, in the gallery, a permanent memorial exhibition on the Jewish history of Kampen. After 16 years with an unchanged presentation, the main building was renovated and reopened on 3 October 2026 with a new presentation of the collection.
