Om museet
The Streekmuseum De Roode Tooren tells the history of the old Bailiwick of Doesborgh, which included the town of Doesburg and the former municipalities of Angerlo, Hummelo and Keppel. It is run by the historical society Stad en Ambt Doesborgh. Its beginnings lie in the Second World War: in 1943 a police officer began secretly collecting historically valuable material, laying the foundation for the later museum collection. The society was officially founded in 1950, but for lack of space it initially existed hardly more than on paper, with a small collection in the town hall attic.
In 1969 the collection could be displayed on the ground floor of Doesburg's town hall, and in 1977 it moved into the former police building. After the neighbouring house was added in 1987, today's complex on the Roggestraat came into being.
The collections include a working tobacco-cutting workshop from 1894, a furnished grocery shop from the period between 1880 and 1940, holdings on trade and crafts, religion, the fire brigade, folk art, flags, textiles, archaeology and geology, models of the town of Doesburg and of the last Dutch ship bridge, as well as the skeleton of the "Geeske van de Gasthuiskerk". A dedicated room honours Theo Colenbrander (1841–1930), the first industrial designer in the Netherlands.
