The Streekmuseum Goeree-Overflakkee in Sommelsdijk goes back to an appeal by A. J. Kruider in April 1949 calling for the founding of an island museum. In the same year the Sommelsdijk municipal council decided to restore a few small houses in the Kerkstraat and make them available to the emerging museum. Until then, a five-day exhibition of loaned items had been shown in 1949 in a school in Middelharnis, visited by around 1,200 people.

On 18 July 1956 the mayor opened the museum, initially in two houses on the Kerkstraat. Further stepped-gable houses were gradually added; today the museum consists of seven interconnected historic buildings with 18 departments in four thematic areas. It is run by an association with an eight-member board, one permanent staff member as supervisor and administrator, and numerous volunteers who also lead tours. Since June 2022 it has been one of the registered museums of the Netherlands.

The collection describes around 2,000 years of the island's history, from Roman settlement through agriculture, fishing and old crafts to everyday life around 1900 with a Flakkee living room and a historic schoolroom. Two highlights are the coin hoard discovered near Dirksland in 2018 with around 3,000 silver coins from the 14th to 16th centuries and a VR experience on the 1953 flood disaster, nominated for a Gouden Kalf. In the attic the WO2GO Foundation shows the island in the Second World War. The association is planning a comprehensive redesign of the museum.

Permanente udstillinger

• Schateiland Goeree-Overflakkee – Permanent presentation of the coin hoard of Dirksland found in 2018, with a replica of the lump, the vessel and original silver coins, as well as touchscreen films.
• Verleden in virtual reality – A VR experience nominated for a Gouden Kalf takes visitors into the flood night of 1953, complemented by touchscreens on the formation of the island, fishing and the Romans.
• Dagelijks leven rond 1900 – A Flakkee living room, historic classroom, traditional costumes and jewellery show everyday life on the island around 1900.
