Om museet

The Mondriaan family moved to Winterswijk in 1880, where the father became head teacher at a Christian school. They lived on the Zonnebrink, on the spot where the villa stands today. Young Piet practised drawing and painting here, roamed the Achterhoek landscape with his uncle Frits, and in 1892 went to the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. With his later abstract art he became world-famous in Paris and New York.

The house gradually fell into disrepair; in 1982 it was threatened with demolition. Jan and Elizabeth Nijhuis bought and renovated it and opened the "Galerie Mondriaanhuis". Elizabeth Nijhuis had long cherished the idea of a Mondriaan museum. With the support of the citizens of Winterswijk, the municipality and the province, it became reality: Wim van Krimpen, former director of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and the Kunsthal Rotterdam, became director, and a patron made it possible to buy the villa and two neighbouring houses and to carry out a thorough conversion. Princess Beatrix opened the museum on 21 May 2013.

Today the house sees itself as a museum of "coming-of-age". Alongside early works by Mondriaan, it shows works by well-known and young artists in their search for a style of their own. For the tenth anniversary, Café Mondriaan opened. Around 55 volunteers and two temporary junior directors keep the museum running.
