Om museet
The foundation of the museum was laid by Vreden collector Hermann Gebing, who bought his first papercut in Paris in 1971 and subsequently gathered works from many countries and styles. Many pieces came as gifts from artist friends. In 1996 he first showed his collection in private rooms and already then regularly organized special exhibitions.
In 2006 Gebing contributed his papercuts as a fund to the newly founded Bürgerstiftung Vreden (Vreden citizens' foundation). The foundation then opened Germany's first papercut museum in the heritage-protected Alte Rathaus (old town hall) on the market square, which had served as the town hall until 1972. Gebing managed the museum on a voluntary basis until his death in 2019.
A renovation completed in May 2015 modernized the exhibition rooms and secures the long-term preservation of the delicate paper works. The Bürgerstiftung covers the running costs; around 15 volunteers look after the exhibition. The permanent exhibition ranges from portrait and white-cut works of the 18th and 19th centuries to contemporary works from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
