The 1st Austrian Christmas Museum is housed in the former Bürgerspital (citizens' hospital) on Michaelerplatz in the Steyrdorf district of Steyr. It is based on the collection of Elfriede Kreuzberger, which, according to a 2005 count, comprises around 18,200 objects and is considered the largest private collection of its kind in the world.
On display are about 14,000 pieces of antique Christmas tree ornaments made of glass, porcelain, metal, cardboard and paper, with the period from 1830 to 1945 at the centre. The collector herself decorated the pieces into atmospheric scenes. In the "Steyrer Stubn" on the ground floor, around 200 parlour dolls, dollhouses, tea dolls and doll tableware complement the show.
A special feature is the adventure railway: in rail gondolas, visitors travel through three floors, past scenes of Christmas customs in Austria and many countries, up to the angels' workshop under the roof. The museum is open only during Advent, and the railway runs only in this season.
