Om museet

The Steyrtalbahn opened in 1889 as a narrow-gauge local railway from Steyr (Garsten) to Grünburg and was expanded to a network of around 55 kilometers by 1909. It connected the Steyr valley with the arms factories in Steyr and Letten and with the Pyhrn railway at Klaus. The rise of road traffic and a lack of investment in the track led to partial closures from the 1960s on; in 1982 the last section was discontinued.

The Austrian Society for Railway History (ÖGEG) then acquired the just over 17-kilometer line between the Steyr Lokalbahnhof and Grünburg, saving what it says is Austria's oldest 760 mm narrow-gauge railway from dismantling. Steam trains have been running here again since 1985, initially on weekends from June to September and during Advent. The route follows the Steyr river through floodplain meadows and forest, past the Unterhimmel-Christkindl stop, and over a large steel arch bridge shortly before Grünburg.

The association's vehicle stock is part of the museum: steam locomotives from several decades, including the 298.102 built in 1888, as well as diesel locomotives, rail trolleys (Draisinen), two- and four-axle passenger carriages, open summer cars and a buffet car. At Grünburg station, vehicles, the workshop hall and a small exhibition on the history of the Steyrtalbahn can be viewed.

    Planlæg dit besøg

Godt at videGroups of 8 or more must reserve at least two days in advance; individual travelers can join at any time. On the winter trips, strong demand is expected (about 220 seats per train, at most 40% for groups), so it is best to be at the station at least half an hour before departure. At Grünburg station, vehicles, the workshop hall and a small exhibition can be visited. Bicycles are taken along free of charge, as space allows.
