Om museet

The building at Rathausstraße 21 was constructed in 1880 to plans by the city master builder Anton Adametz. The orthopedist Adolf Lorenz (1854–1946), founder of the German Orthopedic Society, held his practice here on the second floor from 1903. The proximity to the university and the General Hospital made the address synonymous with orthopedics, and patients from all over the world came to the practice. In 1909 the family also moved into the apartment opposite, which was connected to the practice.

When Lorenz moved his main residence to Altenberg in 1930, the apartment was given up, while the practice, at a good 245 square meters, remained. Today it consists of four large and seven smaller rooms, some of which are still preserved in their original condition. His son Albert, also an orthopedist, ran the practice first together with his father and later alone, without altering the rooms; his widow Helga Lorenz then used them until 1993 as a therapeutic sports institute.

The Adolf Lorenz Association, founded in 1992, is dedicated to preserving this practice as a museum memorial. In 1993 a memorial plaque designed by the sculptor Rudolf Friedl was placed next to the building's portal, a thorough renovation followed in 2001, and the collection was expanded with an extensive library of orthopedic specialist literature from 1889 onward. The rooms are also used for small events and guided tours; the memorial can be explored online in a virtual tour.
