Om museet

The impetus for a permanent money exhibition came in 1966 with the jubilee exhibition for the 150th anniversary of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. In the 1980s two showrooms were set up on the ground floor of the main building, open one afternoon a week and showing as many objects as possible in a strictly chronological cabinet arrangement.

In 1999 the bank decided to realign the museum and to run it with its own specialist staff. After several years of planning and construction, the Geldmuseum began operating in its present form in 2003; since then there have been regular opening hours as well as tours and workshops for groups. The building on Otto-Wagner-Platz presents 2,600 years of monetary history and more than 200 years of banking history.

The permanent exhibition "Das Geld" comprises over 250 objects and explains money as a means of payment, a store of value and a unit of account. It leads from unusual means of payment such as cocoa beans and tulip bulbs to the euro and sheds light on the development of the national bank. Special features include a 12.5-kilogram gold bar that visitors can touch and the 31-kilogram Philharmonic gold coin worth 100,000 euros. The museum's collection comprises around 200,000 objects, mainly Austrian paper money with banknotes, printing plates and designs, along with a coin collection.
