Om museet

The townhouse on Badener Rathausgasse dates back at its core to the 16th century and was for a long time a craftsman's house. At the beginning of the 19th century it belonged to a coppersmith who rented rooms to spa guests. Ludwig van Beethoven, who spent many summers taking the cure in Baden, lived here on the first floor in 1821, 1822 and 1823. During those summers he worked intensively on his Ninth Symphony, especially the fourth movement, whose melody is now known as the European anthem, hence the nickname "House of the Ninth".

The town of Baden bought the house, last used as a bakery, in 1962 and in 1965 opened a memorial in Beethoven's former living quarters, which was extended in the late 1980s. After the last tenants moved out, a comprehensive renovation with building research began in 2012, during which the apartment's original colour scheme was rediscovered, among other things.

Since autumn 2014 the Beethoven House has been a contemporary museum on three levels. The Biedermeier rooms convey Beethoven's everyday life as a spa guest, while exhibits and documents tell of his stays in the spa town. A dedicated room makes the finale of the Ninth audible, visible and readable, and a listening lab lets visitors explore the basics of hearing. Among the treasures is a fortepiano by Conrad Graf on which Beethoven played. The house is run by the municipality of Baden.
