Om museet
In April 1972 district head Heinrich A. Heinz and the curator of the Schottenstift, Robert Mucnjak, together with interested residents, founded the Museumsverein Innere Stadt and decided to set up a district museum. At first the former registry in the courtyard of the Old Town Hall served as exhibition and work space.
From 1985 to 2005 the museum was housed in the rooms of a former bakery on Wipplingerstraße. When the citizens' service moved in there, it relocated to newly adapted, larger rooms in the small inner courtyard of the Old Town Hall, where many objects that had long been kept in storage could be shown for the first time.
The tour begins with engravings and watercolours of the old city. The first exhibition room runs from Roman times to 1848 – with Roman finds, medieval coins, a fragment of the old Pummerin and Biedermeier nativity figures. The second room covers the period from 1848, including mementos of the imperial house, theatre programmes of the court theatres, door leaves from the Ringtheater, which burned down in 1881, and a draft of the 1914 declaration of war. The archive and library, with the house card index of the Zabusch collection, are open to visitors during opening hours.
