Om museet
The Vienna Fire Brigade Museum is the oldest of its kind in Austria. It was founded on 20 November 1901 following the international exhibition on fire protection and fire rescue in Berlin and a similar exhibition in the Vienna Rotunda. The foundation was made up of 35 paintings and 13 sculptures that Austrian artists had donated to the fire brigade on the occasion of the Berlin exhibition; by 1907 the collection had grown to 214 objects.
Over the course of the 20th century the museum changed premises several times; after the Second World War, a provisional display was set up in 1956 on the sixth floor of Am Hof 9. The museum reopened on 10 September 1969, the display was expanded as early as 1970, and for the anniversary "300 Years of Fire Brigade" a fundamentally redesigned exhibition was created in 1986. In 2018 the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
Today the museum is located in the Merklein House on the square Am Hof, a Baroque building designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. Eight exhibition rooms display historic uniforms, equipment, photographs, paintings and documents. The story spans from the medieval fire hands with their wooden-box pumps to emergency personnel with modern protective equipment. Notable and tragic events in Viennese fire brigade history, such as the fires at the Ringtheater, the Rotunda and the Palace of Justice, are also examined. Historic emergency vehicles can be seen in the display depot at the Floridsdorf main fire station.
