Om museet
The Leopoldstadt district museum was founded in 1963 at the suggestion of the then district head Hubert Hladej and has been housed ever since in the district office of the 2nd district at Karmelitergasse 9 – reached via its own entrance to the right of the main entrance. It is run by volunteers and belongs to the association of Vienna's district museums.
The tour begins with a model of the Giant Ferris Wheel about two metres high, which an unemployed bricklayer built around 1930 from burnt matches. It then turns to the district's position on the water – from Danube branches, bridges and ship mills to the regulation of the Danube – to the traces of the Ottoman sieges, the Augarten with its porcelain manufactory, and Leopoldstadt as a transport hub with the Nordbahnhof, Vienna's first railway station; an original window rosette from the station building has been preserved. Further chapters deal with the Prater, with the beginnings of cinema and the 1873 World's Fair, as well as the many artists connected with the district.
Jewish life on the "Mazzesinsel" takes up a great deal of space; particularly striking is the original door of a Nazi-era collective apartment, bearing traces of forced entry. Since 1 July 2026 the museum has been closed for a complete renovation; reopening is planned for 2029.
