Om museet

The foundation stone was laid in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard with a fortified residence on the Festungsberg; his successors expanded the complex in the 12th century, and an outer ring wall was added later. The fortress served the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg as a refuge, a symbol of power and at times a residence, and was never destroyed in the course of its history.

The defining phase of expansion came around 1500 under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach: he had the Hoher Stock with its magnificent Princes' Chambers installed (1501/02) and the "Salzburger Stier" barrel organ set up. In the Peasants' War of 1525 the fortress withstood a siege lasting several weeks; in the 17th century Paris Lodron reinforced the fortifications, and the Kuenburg Bastion was built in 1681.

In the 19th century the complex lost its role as a fortress and was used as barracks. Since 1892 the FestungsBahn, Austria's oldest funicular, has carried visitors up the mountain. Since 1924 the Rainer Regiment Museum has been housed here.

Today the Salzburger Burgen & Schlösser Betriebsführung of the Province operates the fortress as the city's most visited attraction. The tour includes the Princes' Chambers with the multimedia Magic Theatre, the Panorama Tour up to the viewing tower, the Fortress Museum, designed with holdings from the Salzburg Museum, the Armoury and the Marionette Museum.
