Om museet
The Forestry Museum was founded in 1979 by the Forstmuseumsverein Großreifling and sees itself as a museum for forestry across all of Austria, not just the region. It is housed in the “Neuer Kasten”, a granary of the Innerberger Hauptgewerkschaft dating from 1771, which once helped supply the Eisenwurzen region. In 2004 the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
On four exhibition levels and in the storage depot, the focus is on work in the forest and the transport of timber: hand-drawn and horse-drawn sleds, forest railways, cable cars and timber chutes, log driving and rafting, as well as the trades of the woodcutter and skilled forestry worker and the old forest trades of charcoal burning and pitch gathering. The connection to the Iron Road is always present, since charcoal was the basis of iron processing at the Erzberg for centuries.
With the permanent exhibition “Wald:Welten”, opened in May 2025, the museum was reorganised: augmented reality stations, digital media and interactive elements show how the forest is changing under climate change. A 3D nature cinema with images from the Gesäuse National Park and regular special tours complement the tour.

| Godt at vide | Group tours with local guides last 1 to 1.5 hours. There is a special tour for people with dementia (max. 3 people with dementia plus companions, €25 per tour). School programmes last 2 to 3 hours and can be booked flexibly. The AR stations only work with the “Wald:Welten” app; loan devices with the app preinstalled are available in the museum. The tour can be freely arranged without a guide. |
