Om museet
With its Baroque collegiate church, the "Dom am Pyhrn", the former foundation still shapes the village of Spital am Pyhrn today. It grew out of a medieval hospice for travellers crossing the Pyhrn Pass, which was converted in 1418 into a collegiate foundation of secular canons. The present Baroque complex was built in the 17th and early 18th centuries; the church was built from 1714 by Johann Michael Prunner. The foundation was dissolved in 1809, after which the buildings served, among other things, for administration and forestry. Later the Austrian Rock Art Museum displayed rock engravings from the surrounding area in the Baroque rooms; it has since been dissolved.
Since the end of 2015 the foundation building has housed a youth and family hotel and the museum "Zwischen Himmel und Erde" (Between Heaven and Earth). Its patron is Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, a native of Spital am Pyhrn, who was the first woman to climb all 14 eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen and who contributed films, photographs and equipment.
On some 400 m², the exhibition tells the history of mountaineering, explains the physical and mental demands of high-altitude climbing and follows the phases of an 8000-metre expedition. In an experience room, visitors can get a feel for altitude, steepness and wind force; original footage of the avalanche that hit the base camp on Mount Everest in 2015 is also shown. In front of the entrance stands a climbing tower modelled on K2, and from the museum the 8000er trail leads through the Dr.-Vogelgesang-Klamm gorge to the Großer Pyhrgas.
