Om museet
The Geo-Info Kapfenstein is a museum of the municipality of Kapfenstein and part of its cultural platform. It tells the geological history of the municipal area and the Styrian Volcano Land region, and also serves as an information point for locals and visitors. It is based on the regional geological collection of the geologist Arthur Winkler-Hermaden (1890 to 1963), who spent his whole life studying the volcanoes on the eastern edge of the Alps.
On display are rocks and fossils that tell of a restless landscape: lava and ash from volcanic eruptions, mussels, snails and plant impressions from a former sea, from coastal zones and swamp forests. Particularly well known are the “olivine bombs”, green mineral lumps from the Earth's mantle that were hurled to the surface by explosions around two million years ago and give the Kapfenstein volcano its trademark.
The museum complements the Geo-Trail Kapfenstein and is a starting point for excursions to geologically interesting places in the region. It holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality, which was first awarded in 2012 and awarded again for five years on 12 October 2022.

By train to Fehring, then bus 409 to Kapfenstein Ortsmitte (information according to the tourism portal).
The museum is in the village centre in the community centre next to the inn “Zur Dorfwirtin”, about 70 km from Graz.
