Om museet
Bad Gleichenberg developed as a spa town in the 1830s: a joint-stock association under Matthias Constantin Capello von Wickenburg tapped the healing springs, and in 1837 a well temple was built over the Konstantinquelle, where spa guests drank the healing water. Guests from aristocratic society came as early as the first season, and later Emperor Franz Joseph as well.
An earlier spa museum in the Kurhaus was lost, along with all its holdings, in the fighting at the end of the Second World War in March 1945. Around 1950 the Brunnenhaus was rebuilt to plans by Karl Lebwohl as a round pavilion with a conical roof and lantern; the listed building has a ceiling painting by Wolfgang Buchner from 1990. The drinking fountain is no longer in operation.
After decades without a museum, the Curmuseumsverein opened a new exhibition in the former well temple in June 2012. Its foundation is the collection of the former spa director Willy Rauch. Picture panels, spa lists with prominent names, travel accessories and ball donations tell of the area's early history, the founding of the "Curort Gleichenberg", the imperial visits and the social life of the spa guests.
