Om museet

The museum was founded in 1928 for the city's 800th anniversary as the Historical Museum of the City of Graz, supported by the city administration, the Joanneum provincial museum, the two universities and the provincial archive. The collection was initially kept in storage and in the town hall; only ten years later were exhibition rooms available in Palais Attems. In 1951 the museum became part of the Joanneum and moved to Eggenberg Palace; in 1969 it returned to the city centre and came under municipal responsibility.

Since 1972 the museum has had its permanent home in Palais Khuenburg at Sackstrasse 18, where a permanent display on the city's history opened in 1982. In the 1990s the building was modernised and the focus shifted to special exhibitions. In 2005 it was spun off into Stadtmuseum Graz GmbH, which is wholly owned by the city; since autumn 2012 the museum has been called Graz Museum.

The permanent exhibition "360 Graz" tells the history of the city up to the present using original objects and was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2014. The museum also includes a historic pharmacy museum and the Gothic Hall in the inner courtyard. With annual themes, participatory formats and the aim of being a democratic city museum, the Graz Museum received the Austrian Museum Prize in 2024. It also operates a second exhibition venue with its own ticket on the Schlossberg.
