Om museet

The Volkskundemuseum (Museum of Folk Life and Culture) was founded in 1913 as a department of the Joanneum provincial museum; Viktor Geramb was instrumental in building it up. Its collection documents the material and intellectual culture of Styria and comprises tens of thousands of objects as well as a specialist library on folklore studies and a photo archive.

It is housed in a former Capuchin monastery from the early 17th century on Paulustorgasse on the Schloßberg. In the 1930s an extension was added with exhibition rooms, a costume hall and an equipment hall. The complex also includes the Antoniuskirche (St Anthony's Church), which has been used since 1916 for cultural events such as Styrian shepherds' and nativity songs.

Following a fundamental redesign, the permanent exhibition "Welten – Wandel – Perspektiven" (Worlds – Change – Perspectives) opened in 2021. It addresses topics such as prosperity and consumption, coexistence, migration and insecurity from the perspective of people in Styria and includes contemporary objects. The costume hall created by Geramb from 1936 was reinterpreted in 2022; since the end of 2024 a collection cabinet has shown changing objects from the depot.
