Om museet
From 1911 until his death in 1918, Gustav Klimt used a ground-floor garden house on Hietzing's Feldmühlgasse as a studio. More than 50 paintings from his late years were created here, including the second portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, “The Bride” and “Adam and Eve”.
Klimt did not know the present villa: only after his death did the owners have the garden house extended; in 1923 the Klein family completed the conversion with an upper floor, a southern annex and a northern outdoor staircase. This created a house within a house, at whose core the old studio rooms were preserved. In 1939 the Jewish Klein family had to flee from the Nazis; after 1945 the villa was returned to them, and in 1957 they sold the house to the Republic of Austria, which used it as a school for a long time.
Afterwards the building stood empty and was even threatened with demolition. After protests from the public, the Burghauptmannschaft and the Federal Monuments Office had the villa renovated for the Klimt Year 2012. On the ground floor, the structure of the studio was restored as far as possible, and the painter's reception and work rooms were faithfully reconstructed.
Besides the studio, the house shows the permanent exhibition “Klimt Lost”, which deals with persecuted collectors, Nazi-looted art and Klimt's missing works. The garden, about 6,500 square metres in size, is being gradually replanted following the historical model; in 2022 a Klimt sculpture by Erwin Kastner was added on the south side.
