Om museet

The idea for the Krippenmuseum came about in 1982, when the Dornbirn nativity association visited a nativity museum in Italy and wished to create a similar house in Vorarlberg. The town of Dornbirn pledged its support, and in the following years the members gathered nativity scenes and nativity figures from many countries.

By 1995, about 120 pieces had been collected, and the search for a suitable building began. The choice fell on the Glockenstadel in the Gütle, a district at the entrance to the Rappenloch Gorge. The building had formerly been a horse stable and was more than 140 years old. In May 2002, the association began the renovation; after eleven months of construction and about 4,500 hours of volunteer work, the Krippenmuseum opened its doors on May 1, 2003.

Today, the museum shows around 110 nativity scenes and nativity figure groups from around the world, in different styles, eras and materials, across roughly 400 square meters; some pieces are exchanged every year. A highlight on the ground floor is a 23-meter-long nativity landscape by the Italian nativity builder Antonio Pigozzi, with 14 stations from the life of Jesus. Large display cases also tell the Christmas story with numerous figures. The museum is run on a volunteer basis by the Krippenverein Dornbirn, with support from the town and the state.
