Om museet

Schloss Rotholz was built between 1575 and 1585 under the name Thurnegg as a hunting and pleasure palace for Archduke Ferdinand II, the sovereign of Tyrol; the master builder was Albrecht Lucchese. In 1704 the Counts of Tannenberg moved the seat of the court here, renamed the manor Rotholz and had it rebuilt in high Baroque style by 1706. In 1809 French troops plundered the precious furnishings. In the 19th century the house at times belonged to the state and later to the Prince-Bishops of Brixen; after a monastery fire, Benedictines from Fiecht found refuge here from 1868 to 1870, and from 1870 to 1876 there was a boys' seminary.

Since 1879 the building has served the State of Tyrol as an agricultural college, and in 1889 the state acquired the castle. Today it houses vocational schools for agriculture and for rural business and household management, vocational schools for forestry and horticulture, adult education and a boarding school.

The farming tools collection dates back to 1957: Provincial Councillor Eduard Wallnöfer suggested documenting farm work before mechanisation. With the support of former pupils, around 800 objects from the Tyrolean Unterland were gathered. They stand closely packed in one large room of the school building, grouped by theme: soil cultivation, hay and grain harvesting, carts and wagons, woodworking, dairy, wool and flax processing, and an open kitchen with household goods and farmhouse furniture.
