Om museet

The Jenbach Museum is housed in the Reitlingerhaus, originally called the Schrofenhaus after the Weißer Schrofen mining area. Miners probably lived here first. When the Fugger family moved its smelting works from Schwaz to Jenbach at the end of the 15th century, they moved into the house. In 1880 the Reitlinger family bought the property and from 1916 expanded it into a manor house surrounded by a high wall. In 1974 it passed to the municipality of Jenbach. A year later the wall was torn down and the park opened.

Since 1991 the museum association has set up the exhibition on the first, second, and third floors, which opened in 1996. The fourth floor houses the South Tyrol Documentation Center, the library, and office and archive rooms. In 2002 the facade was renovated and the outdoor area redesigned; it includes the first steam locomotive of the Zillertalbahn and the first diesel locomotive built in 1949 at the Jenbacher Werke.

On about 700 square meters, the collection shows local history, including the more than 500-year-old scythe industry with a replica forge, Jenbach's three railways, mining and smelting, and the Jenbacher Werke. Other rooms cover the South Tyroleans resettled in 1939, natural history with butterflies, birds, snails, shells, and mushrooms, and winter sports and mountaineering. The house has received the Austrian and Tyrolean Museum Prize and the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
