Om museet
Salt has been extracted in the high valley above Hallstatt for thousands of years; Salzwelten therefore describes the salt mountain as the oldest salt mine in the world. The burial ground in the high valley gave the Hallstatt period (roughly 800 to 400 BC) its name, and Johann Georg Ramsauer uncovered almost a thousand graves there from 1846. Because salt preserves organic material, tools, lighting sticks and ropes from the Bronze and Iron Ages have survived; in 1734 miners also came across a prehistoric miner enclosed in the salt, the “Man in Salt”.
A first show mine was set up in 1926. In 2002 archaeologists found a wooden staircase dated to the 14th century BC, which is regarded as the oldest preserved wooden staircase in Europe; today it stands in the “Bronze Age Cinema” underground. Every summer the Natural History Museum Vienna conducts research in the burial ground and the old galleries together with Salzwelten and Salinen Austria AG.
The operator is Salzwelten GmbH, a subsidiary of Salinen Austria AG, which also runs the show mines at Dürrnberg and in Altaussee. After about a year of construction, a new, barrier-free funicular with a new valley and mountain station, bistro and large shop went into operation at the end of August 2026; at the same time the show mine was modernised.
The visit begins with the ride up to the high valley and the skywalk above the village. An experience trail across the burial ground leads to the Knappenhaus (miners' house), where the roughly 90-minute guided tour starts: about two kilometres on foot through the mountain, down long miners' slides to the illuminated underground salt lake and back into daylight on the mine train.
