Om museet

The Salzburg Open-Air Museum goes back to the building researcher Kurt Conrad, who began saving rural buildings from across the province for a museum in isolated cases from 1968 and systematically from 1972. The museum was formally founded on 21 December 1978, and the first houses were re-erected at the foot of the Untersberg in Großgmain the following year. On 24 September 1984, Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger opened the museum.

The museum is run by the State of Salzburg; the 50-hectare site lies in a nature and landscape conservation area and is leased long-term from the Mayr-Melnhof family. The houses are dismantled at their original location, studied by building historians and rebuilt true to the original. They are grouped by the regions of Flachgau, Tennengau, Pongau, Pinzgau and Lungau and linked by a seven-kilometre network of paths and a 1.7-kilometre museum railway.

The museum shows building, living and farming in the countryside from the 15th to the 20th century: farmsteads, alpine huts, mills, forges, a brewery and an early small power plant. Several permanent exhibitions, shadow plays in the houses and craft demonstrations complete the tour. The museum won the Austrian Museum Prize in 1995.

For the 2026 season, a new visitor centre made of wood, glass and concrete was opened, with a ticket desk, museum shop, terrain model, specialist library and seminar room. The museum is supported by a friends' association with now around 10,000 members.
