Om museet
On 14 June 1964, the exhibition “Haager Heimatstuben” opened in the courtyard of Schloss Starhemberg. A working group initiated by the Catholic Education Association of Geboltskirchen had prepared it; the museum was run by the municipalities of Geboltskirchen, Rottenbach, Weibern and Haag am Hausruck. The castle’s then owner initially made six rooms available, including a coal mining museum, an old farmhouse parlour and a room on local history with documents.
In 1987 the working group reconstituted itself, and the curator Hans Huber redesigned the presentation. His core themes still shape the permanent exhibition today: country life, history, crafts, castles and fortresses, and mining. Since the beginning, special exhibitions have been added every year to enliven a visit.
The tour shows old views of the region’s castles and palaces, religious treasures from the Reformation period, a farmhouse parlour from around 1900, tools of extinct crafts and the history of brown coal mining in the eastern Hausruck. There are also more than 50 miniature rooms at a scale of 1:12 by Brigitte Zurucker-Burda and a display on notable figures from the region, such as the Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer, who was born in Haag.
