Om museet

Schloss Vösendorf in the district of Mödling is first documented in 1175 and was rebuilt in the 16th century. At the end of the 18th century it came into imperial ownership; it acquired its present form in a conversion around 1808. After decades of decay, the municipality of Vösendorf bought the castle in 1991 and had it revitalised by 1999. Since then it has housed the municipal office, a library, a castle café and several museums.

The Historical Museum, also called the Schlossmuseum, is devoted to local history: the tour begins at the Pannonian Sea and leads via the Romans and Avars to the owners of the castle. A separate section recalls the brick industry of the region, in which workers from Bohemia and Moravia, the so-called "Ziegelbehm", produced bricks for Vienna's grand buildings under harsh conditions.

Another part of the exhibition presents the agricultural pioneer Peter Jordan, under whose direction new agricultural machines were built and tested in Vösendorf and who modernised livestock farming and arable farming. In the castle cellar the municipality also shows the Bicycle Museum, and the Nativity Scene Museum is located in the former granary.
