Om museet
Construction of the palace on Bankgasse began in 1691 for Count Dominik Andreas Kaunitz to plans by Enrico Zuccalli. In 1694 Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein bought the unfinished building, made it the primogeniture residence of his family and had it completed by Domenico Martinelli. The portal to Bankgasse is considered the first monumental Baroque portal in Vienna; stucco by Santino Bussi and sculptures by Giovanni Giuliani adorn the magnificent staircase. From 1705, paintings from the princely collection were on display on the second floor, before the gallery moved to the Garden Palace in the Rossau in the early 19th century.
Under Prince Alois II, Peter Hubert Desvignes redesigned the interiors between 1836 and 1847 in the Second Rococo style – one of the earliest interiors of this kind. Michael Thonet and Carl Leistler produced the famous inlaid parquet floors; technical refinements such as revolving mirror doors, an elevator and a warm-air heating system made the building famous. It opened with a grand ball in 1848.
Bombs and a crashed aircraft severely damaged the palace at the end of the Second World War. After an elaborate restoration of about five years, it has been accessible again since April 2013. Today it serves as an event venue and can be visited on guided tours, which also show paintings and furniture of Neoclassicism and Biedermeier from the Princely Collections, for example by Friedrich von Amerling, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Friedrich Gauermann.
