Om museet
To mark the 100th anniversary of the crystal company Swarovski, Swarovski Kristallwelten opened in 1995 in Wattens, the company’s headquarters. The Viennese multimedia artist André Heller designed the green giant for it, whose water-spouting head forms the entrance to the underground exhibition rooms.
These so-called Chambers of Wonder take up the idea of the Renaissance cabinets of art and curiosities, such as those created by Archduke Ferdinand II at Schloss Ambras. International artists and designers create room-filling installations with crystal in them; the rooms are repeatedly given new programmes, and works by Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell, among others, have been on show, with works by Chiharu Shiota and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer most recently added.
With a major renovation in 2014, the grounds grew into a 7.5-hectare park – with the Crystal Cloud by Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot made of around 800,000 crystals above black mirror water, a labyrinth in the shape of a hand, a crystal carousel by the designer Jaime Hayon, and a play tower and playground. During construction work, walls of a Roman farmstead from the 3rd century together with a hoard of coins were uncovered, and are now on view in the park. According to the operator, more than 18 million guests have visited since the opening. The site also includes a large Swarovski store and the restaurant Daniels Kristallwelten; everything is run by D. Swarovski Tourism Services GmbH.
