Om museet
Hasegg Castle originated as the corner fortification of the Hall saltworks: a watchtower near the brine pans is mentioned in 1296, the castle itself in 1306. It safeguarded salt production, Inn river shipping and the river crossing. Under Archduke Sigmund the Rich in Coin, the site was developed into a princely residence from 1480; the striking Mint Tower, today the town's landmark, was built at that time. Maximilian I had the east wing rebuilt in stone and the St George's Chapel installed.
The Tyrolean mint had been moved from Merano to Hall in 1477; here, in 1486, the Guldiner, one of the first large silver coins and a forerunner of the thaler, was struck. In 1567 the mint moved into Hasegg Castle, where water-driven roller-stamping presses were soon in use. Operations ceased only in 1809.
Since 1975 the rooms have been open as a museum. Today the municipal Hall AG runs the venue: in the Münze Hall museum, an audio guide leads through the history of money and minting technology; the centrepiece is the eight-metre-long replica of the historic roller-stamping press at its original location, complemented by uncovered foundations of the water wheels.
The climb up the Mint Tower is accompanied by light and sound effects and ends with a panoramic view over Hall, the Inn Valley and the Karwendel. Kestrels nest in the small spiral staircase tower, and below it lies the city archaeology section with finds on the history of Hall. Also on display is the Europataler, a silver coin 36 centimetres in diameter and weighing over 20 kilograms. At the end, visitors can strike a coin themselves.
