Om museet
The folk culture department of the Salzburg Museum was established in 1904 at the instigation of the teachers and folklorists Karl Adrian and Sebastian Greiderer. Both worked in the circles of the Heimatschutz (homeland protection) movement, whose collecting activity was later also co-opted by nationalists – an aspect that the museum's work today addresses critically.
In 1924 the collection moved into the Monatsschlössl on the Hellbrunn hill, which Archbishop Markus Sittikus had built in 1615. An anniversary exhibition marking one hundred years at the site recalls the collecting practices of the founding era in 2026.
Objects from the 18th to the 21st century are on show: traditional costumes and textiles with accessories, farmhouse furniture, craft techniques, religious objects, nativity scenes from the 18th-century box nativity to works by contemporary artists, and historical masks. The presentations relate what has been collected to present-day questions of identity and belonging.
The building stands secluded in the forest above the palace park and offers views of Hohensalzburg Fortress, Hellbrunn Palace and the park grounds. It belongs to the Salzburg Museum.
