Om museet
The Wien Museum was founded in 1887 as the Historisches Museum der Stadt Wien and from 1888 showed its first display collection in the new town hall. The core consisted of weapons, armour and trophies from the Bürgerliches Zeughaus (civic arsenal). Plans for a building of its own – including Otto Wagner’s famous designs for Karlsplatz – failed over decades.
Only in 1959 did the new building designed by Oswald Haerdtl in the style of moderate modernism open on Karlsplatz, the first new museum building of the Second Republic. In 2002 the museum was spun off from the city administration and given the name Wien Museum; the group today includes numerous other sites such as the Hermesvilla, the Roman Museum or the musicians’ memorial sites.
Following an architectural competition in 2015, the listed building was renovated to plans by Certov, Winkler+Ruck and extended with a striking glass and concrete superstructure. Since its reopening on 6 December 2023, the free permanent exhibition “Wien. Meine Geschichte” has shown about 1,700 objects on around 3,300 square metres across three floors – from prehistoric finds and the original figures of the Donnerbrunnen and the large model of St. Stephen’s Cathedral to Klimt’s portrait of Emilie Flöge and the Prater whale “Poldi”. Special exhibitions take place on the fourth floor, and a freely accessible terrace offers a view over the city centre.
