Om museet

The Secession was founded in 1897, when young artists around Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich broke away from the conservative Künstlerhaus. A dedicated exhibition building was part of the new association's programme from the start. Olbrich, then an employee of Otto Wagner, designed the building; because the site originally planned on the Ringstraße met with resistance in the city council, it was built on Friedrichstraße – initially only as a pavilion with a time-limited permit. Financed, among others, by the industrialist Karl Wittgenstein, the building was completed in autumn 1898 after about six months of construction.

The cube-shaped building with the gilded laurel-leaf dome and the motto above the entrance was initially mocked and is now regarded as a key work of Viennese Art Nouveau. For the 14th exhibition in 1902, a homage to Beethoven, Klimt created his monumental wall frieze. It was actually meant to be removed afterwards; instead it was divided into sections, sold, confiscated in 1938 from the Jewish collector family Lederer, and only acquired by the Republic of Austria in 1972 and subsequently restored.

During the general renovation in the mid-1980s, the frieze received its own air-conditioned room in the basement; since 1986 it has been on permanent view there as a loan from the Belvedere. The other spaces – the main hall with its glass roof, the Graphic Cabinet and the gallery in the basement – continue to serve changing exhibitions of contemporary art. The association is still run by artists, whose elected board jointly determines the programme.
