Om museet

Emperor Maximilian I had the Zeughaus (arsenal) built between 1500 and 1505 on the Sill river outside the gates of Innsbruck as a weapons arsenal. Two long, two-storey wings and narrow connecting wings enclose a large inner courtyard; guns, firearms and ammunition were stored here, and workshops of the flourishing Tyrolean armaments industry operated all around. Until 1918 the building served as barracks, and afterwards, among other things, as a warehouse.

After a restoration in the 1960s, the Province of Tyrol opened a regional museum here in 1973. Today the Zeughaus is one of the venues of the Tiroler Landesmuseen and shows the cultural history of Tyrol from the first traces of settlement to the present.

The permanent exhibition "Schatz Tirol. Gestern. Heute. Morgen." (Treasure Tyrol. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow.) is divided into eleven areas: it begins with the history of the building itself and leads via landscape and everyday life, politics and monuments to agriculture, mining, industry, transport, sport and tourism. Personal stories of Tyroleans, selected collection objects and interactive stations link past and present; individual areas are regularly refreshed. In summer, the inner courtyard is used for concerts, cinema and theatre, and the Tiroler Geschichtsverein (Tyrolean History Society) is also based in the building.
