Om museet
Albert Einstein came to Bern in early 1902, initially working as a private tutor and becoming a technical expert at the Patent Office in June of that year. In 1903, he married Mileva Marić; from 1903 to 1905, the couple rented the apartment on the second floor of Kramgasse 49. During this time, his early scientific work was produced.
The Albert Einstein Society, founded in 1977, made it its task to preserve the apartment as a memorial. For Einstein's 100th birthday, the Einstein House opened on March 14, 1979. For the 2005 anniversary, the house underwent careful renovation after 26 years; the stairwell and entrance were restored, while the old spiral staircase remained in its original state.
The apartment is furnished in the style of the period with furniture, pictures, and texts, showing how Einstein lived with Mileva and their son Hans Albert. On the third floor, an exhibition tells his biography and life's work; a 20-minute video introduces his life and thinking. In 2015, the house was designated a historical site by the European and American Physical Societies.
