Om museet
The foundation of the collection was laid in 1873 by the physician Emil Wieland and the town priest Carl Schröter when they established an antiquities commission. From the 1880s they collected objects relating to the town's religious and civic life; in 1883 the municipality took over management of the “Historische Sammlung”. It was initially displayed in the boys' school and, from 1913, in the attic of the town hall.
When space ran short there too, the heirs of the engineer Carl Habich-Dietschy donated the Haus zur Sonne on Marktgasse to the town of Rheinfelden in 1929, on condition that a Fricktal local history museum be set up in it. The house is more than 700 years old: for a long time it was an inn and hostelry, was converted into a residential townhouse in 1843, and was given a stately refurbishment in 1884 and 1889/1894. The collection has been open to the public here since 1934.
Today the holdings comprise well over 20,000 objects, sculptures, paintings, prints, photographs, films and documents, from prehistoric finds to the present day. The former permanent exhibition showed around 2,000 objects on four floors on the history of the Fricktal and the spa town of Rheinfelden; the agricultural collection has been housed in the Ringmauerscheune since 1983 and is accessible on request.
The museum is in a period of transition: since 2026 it has been run by the “Stiftung Fricktaler Museum Rheinfelden”. Until the 900th anniversary of the town of Rheinfelden in 2030, the building will be renovated and the permanent exhibition redesigned under the title “Fricktal – Leben im Grenzraum” (Fricktal – Life in the Border Region). Individual events take place during the closure.
