Om museet
The museum began in 1937 as the "Heimatmuseum" in the Old District Court (Altes Landgericht) of Lenzburg, run by the Stiftung Heimatmuseum Lenzburg. When the building had to be closed in 1972 because of structural defects, the collection was put into storage. In 1973 it was decided to convert the old Burghalde into a museum; after a decade of waiting, conversion and renovation began, and the Museum Burghalde opened on June 22, 1985.
The Burghalde belongs to a stately ensemble of buildings in a park near the Old Town. The old Burghalde was built in 1628 in the Gothic style for Hans Jakob Spengler; a hall with a Baroque stucco ceiling was created in the rear building in 1704/1718, and the neoclassical new Burghalde in 1793/94. Today the group of buildings, including the Kutscherhaus and Hirzelhaus, belongs to the Ortsbürgergemeinde Lenzburg, which has also borne the museum's operating costs since 2009.
After thirty years with an unchanged exhibition, the building was comprehensively renovated in 2017/18, including a new staircase, fire protection and wheelchair accessibility. It reopened in autumn 2018 with a completely redesigned permanent exhibition including changing pop-up exhibition windows. The icon collection was expanded with a studio, mini cinema and exhibition area and forms the Icon Museum in the basement.
Today the museum sees itself as the collective memory of the city and region of Lenzburg and shows around 15,000 years of cultural history, from archaeology through industrial heritage and urban history to graphic art, photography and art. In 2020 it was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award.
