Om museet
The Helmhaus stands directly on the Limmat next to the Münsterbrücke. On its site there was first a timber building from 1563/64; the present stone building was constructed between 1791 and 1794, and the ground floor then housed a market.
In 1940/41 the building was converted for exhibition use. In 1943 the Museum of Architectural History moved in and presented its displays here until the 1980s. Since 1988, and with renewed emphasis since 2001, the focus has been on current art from Zurich; the exchange with the Strauhof made the Helmhaus a venue for contemporary art.
Today the City of Zurich runs the Helmhaus as a cultural institution. Each year four to five exhibitions are produced, featuring works by 100 to 150 artists, from paintings to video. Often the invited artists produce new works, which the house supports financially. Every summer the Helmhaus presents the exhibition for the City of Zurich's art grants. There is no permanent collection; the programme changes continually.

Ramp to the main entrance (two heavy double-leaf doors), lift with a narrow cabin (door 89 cm, cabin 97 × 148 cm); a manual wheelchair is available (advance booking at +41 44 415 56 77). People with disabilities can park in the Helmhaus hall beneath the building (no designated disabled parking spaces; room for two cars). Audio descriptions of the building, how to get there and the exhibitions on the website, accompanied exhibition visits (register 3 days in advance), tours and events in Swiss German Sign Language, earplugs and folding stools at the reception desk on the 1st floor, gender-neutral wheelchair-accessible toilet, dogs are welcome.
