Om museet
The museum is housed in the former residences of the canons in the fortified castle village of Valère, where the cathedral chapter has lived since the 12th century. Its beginnings go back to 1829, when a Jesuit teacher at the college in Sion began collecting natural specimens and the first antiquities. After a cantonal archaeological commission was founded in 1879, the first room opened in 1883 as the "Musée archéologique" on Valère. An agreement with the cathedral chapter in 1891 secured the museum the use of the secular buildings of the castle village, provided the canton maintains them.
In the course of the 20th century the collection grew considerably; newly refurbished buildings were added in 1904 and 1963, and several offshoots emerged from the museum, including the art museum. Between 2004 and 2009 the holdings of the military and archaeological collections were reunited in the museum, which has since operated as the Musée d'histoire du Valais.
Today the permanent exhibition "L'histoire culturelle du Valais" shows around a thousand original objects in 27 rooms, supplemented by models and multimedia stations. The tour leads in chronological order from the hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic through the Romans, the medieval prince-bishops and mercenary service to industrialisation and present-day tourism. In total the collection comprises about 50,000 objects, including the Neolithic menhir stelae of Petit-Chasseur, medieval chests and a coat-of-arms shield with an eagle, as well as the Guigoz collection of antiquities.
