Om museet
The museum opened in 1947 as the Musée cantonal des beaux-arts in the Majorie castle, the former residence of the Bishops of Sion. Previously the canton had spent decades looking for a place for art, since the Historical Museum on Valère did not display paintings. Important impetus came from bequests such as the drawings of Raphael Ritz and the works of the painter Raphy Dallèves; the first curator, Albert de Wolff, built up the collection.
In the 1970s the neighbouring Vidomnat castle, which had previously housed the cantonal art school, was converted into a museum; the first rooms opened there in 1977. After a renovation of the Vidomnat, the museum relaunched in 2007 under the name Musée d'art du Valais and has since awarded the Prix Culturel Manor Valais to young artists every two years. It also has a studio for visiting artists.
The collection comprises around 6,000 works, including about 3,000 works on paper, and focuses on landscape and the imagination of the mountains. Artists represented include Alexandre Calame, François Diday, Caspar Wolf, Félix Vallotton, Oskar Kokoschka and Miriam Cahn, as well as the painters of the École de Savièse around Ernest Biéler. Exhibition cycles drawn from the collection alternate with contemporary projects; works are permanently installed in the building and on the terraces, which offer wide views of the old town, the castles and the vineyards.
