Om museet
Behind the Kunsthaus Zug stands the Zuger Kunstgesellschaft, founded in 1957 with the aim of creating a house for art with its own collection in Zug. After exhibitions in galleries and temporary premises, a first Kunsthaus opened on 26 November 1977 in the converted “old department store” in the old town. From 1978 the city built up a collection with an annual credit, focusing on regional art as well as Swiss Surrealism and Fantastic Realism.
The present building came about in the 1980s: in 1983 the foundation Stiftung der Freunde Kunsthaus Zug acquired the “Hof im Dorf”, a 16th-century complex on the edge of the old town. The architect Franz Füeg added a modern extension with two wings; the new Kunsthaus was opened on 26 May 1990. In the garden stand sculptures by Fritz Wotruba, Michael Kienzer and Richard Tuttle.
With “Projekt Sammlung”, from 1996 the museum reoriented its collection towards contemporary art, which also includes the city. Thanks to the Stiftung Sammlung Kamm, founded in 1998, Zug is also regarded as a centre of Viennese Modernism: more than 400 permanent loans make the collection the most significant of its kind outside Austria. In total the collection comprises around 10,000 works. Because space is limited, it is not on permanent display but is presented anew again and again in thematic exhibitions.
